A Day for Independence

“I will not be "famous," "great." I will go on adventuring, changing, opening my mind and my eyes, refusing to be stamped and stereotyped. The thing is to free one's self: to let it find its dimensions, not be impeded.” ― Virginia Woolf, A Writer's Diary

"We hold these truths to be self-evident..."
The temperature in my car today has not dropped below 103°. It is hot. Incredibly incredibly hot. Maybe that's why I feel like the heat is on. "Out of the frying pan and into the fire," as they say. I've been thinking about the concept of independence and the concept of celebrating a day of independence....

The tradition of making Resolutions seems more suited to this holiday than the New Year, don't you think? On this day we shake free of any chains in our lives, the weights from our past that drag us down. We have a completely clean slate. We have the opportunity declare our intentions, lay out our demands and challenge ourselves [and others] to meet them. We get to list our hopes and dreams and goals for the coming year and sign off on it with a giant John Hancock so no one can mistake our determination to make things better this time.

The 4th of July is about fireworks, sure, and sparklers, and spending the day lakeside with all of the people you love. It's about partying and celebrating and getting off work. It's about honoring soldiers who have given us the freedom to do so. It's an opportunity to wave a giant US flag and wear red, white, & blue shorts and love 'Merica all day long. It's a remembrance of our history, of the people who fought to live here instead of griping and fighting and coming to blows over healthcare and marriage rights.

Today marks the anniversary of standing up, being counted, shaking free, and pushing forward. Independence Day.... Today we have freedom. With so many different forms of weights and shackles, I hope we all take a moment to consider how fortunate we are to have this day set aside for the intended purpose of setting them aside. And if we fail this go round? .... Well, there's always next year. Happy 4th of July!

Sarah :: Plucky in Love

Sarah, aka "Plucky", blogs on the reg, unless she's on vacation or there's a Pretty Little Liars marathon or she's mulling over the implications of the phrase "on fleek." She can't live without iced coffee, a portable phone charger, or equal pay. Say hello!
